Description
“Haha” might be small in stature, but she is big in personality! From the minute she stepped off the trailer, she had a presence about her and made sure that everyone knew it! Her wonderful work ethic from the track has transferred to her next career as a riding horse, and she always is eager to please and happy to try any task given to her.
In addition to being a lovely riding horse, she is as beautiful as you would expect a Bettor's Delight daughter to be. If her big personality doesn't draw you in, her good looks certainly will!
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1 - Haha leads quietly from the barn and pasture in a regular halter and cotton lead rope. She is easy to catch and anyone can handle her on the ground!
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 1 - Always happy to be pampered, Haha stands quietly in the crossties for all grooming, tacking, clipping, bathing and farrier work.
- Horse Care - Level 1 - Haha has no known injuries and requires no special care. She loves to be outside and would be content to live out nearly all the time. She would prefer having her own space to eat her grain however. Haha is currently barefoot and doing well.
- Riding - Level 1 - 2 - It didn't take Haha long to learn what riding was all about! She raced as a pacer but prefers to trot when working under saddle. She stands quietly at the mounting block and is working well at a walk and trot in the arena. She might like a companion for trail riding to begin with, but it wont take long for her to figure it out. She walks, trots and canters well on the lunge line.
- General Demeanor - Level 2 - This mare is a superstar and she knows it! She quickly established herself as the boss of the mare group here, and we expect her to be the same wherever she goes. She is not unkind; she's just happiest at the top of the pecking order and once she finds her best friend, she doesn't like to share. She's quiet and inquisitive with people and has spectacular manners.
- Physical Capability - Level 4 - This petite powerhouse has no known issues and no limitations that we are aware of! She's a fantastic performance prospect for a confident youth or petite adult rider.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
New Vocations intentionally sets our horses’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds from a private seller (in today’s market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at $5,000 to $10,000!).
Our facilities are nearly always at max capacity, which means we can’t take in a new horse until one is adopted. Keeping our adoption fees low helps us find appropriate homes for horses quickly, thereby enabling us to assist even more horses transition off the track as stalls open up in our barns! In that way, when you adopt a horse through New Vocations, you’re actually helping two horses: your new family member and the one who takes his place in our program!
While our adoption fees are low, it’s important to remember that costs associated with the ongoing care and additional training for a horse (adopted or otherwise!) can be high. We hope that by helping adopters save money upfront, you’ll have more funds available to cover the costs of properly caring for and training a retired racehorse.
In general, our fees are set at $3,500, $2,500, $1,000, and Under $1,000:
- $3,500: This range is for horses considered unlimited in their physical ability or those with exceptional qualities that would make them an upper- or high-level equine athlete.
- $2,500: This range is for horses we consider physically capable of a mid- to high-level second career. They have few or relatively minor limitations.
- $1,000: This range is for horses best-suited for a low- to mid-level career. They may have sustained an injury but have been fully treated and rehabbed. These horses have been examined by and cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines, possibly up to a certain level (for example, suitable for a career jumping 2’0” but not suitable for a 3’6” career).
- Under $1,000: This range is for horses that could be harder to place in a perfect situation or those with more limited athletic potential (for example, possibly suitable for flat-work only) but are still capable of a successful second career. They have been evaluated by our veterinarians and are otherwise healthy.
Another perk of adopting from us? We do all we can to give you the most value for your adoption fee. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they're rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, evaluated by trainers and veterinarians, and in regular training with a professional; on average, the monetary value of these services exceeds $5,000. Any medical records (often including X-ray and ultrasounds) and pertinent history we have on each horse is also available to interested and approved adopters.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
