Motown Rhythm is a balanced and compact individual. He is was grouchy when he first came but we have given him plenty of let down time and consistency, slowly but surely his exterior is softening! He is plenty friendly with his pasture buddies, however, and does well in a large group of eight. He is definitely middle of the herd, he is confident enough to hold his own but does not generally boss others around. It’s comical because he is kind of a priss about the water temperature of his baths, he gets all fidgety if its too cold, he much prefers lukewarm to warm. Motown does not have any stall vices such as cribbing or weaving.
Motown is like a sports car to ride, you dont have to mash down on the gas to get him going. He is waiting for your cue and is responsive. He is also responsive to your hand and is so attuned to your cues that his pace can be inconsistent. Our focus with him is try to maintain a consistent pace and with this he is learning to relax going on a looser rein. With time he will continue to soften and will start offering to stretch down. He is a bit high headed down but we do not want to crank his head down when he is tense, we want him at ease and fluid to look for the bit naturally. Motown was claimed out of his last race by previous owners who wanted to see him get a safe retirement and future. He does not have any known injuries and feels versatile enough to go any direction. He could go into eventing or hit the trails with the motor to even do endurance. Motown is best suited for an advanced rider in any direction!
