Description

Meet Cedric, our resident gentle giant with the forelock of your dreams! Between his movie-star looks, great personality, and all-star pedigree, this big guy has it all. His sire, American Lion, actually came through our program in the winter, and Cedric has the same air of class and quality movement as him. Not only is he built like a Warmblood, but he was also very successful on the track, running in multiple graded stakes and earning over a quarter of a million dollars.

On the ground Cedric is a big old teddy bear. He doesn’t mind to be loved on and seeks out attention if someone is around. His manners are excellent; he stands for the farrier and mane pulling and he crossties like its nothing (he has even started learning the basics of ground-tie training, as well)!

In turnout, Cedric tends to be more submissive and doesn’t fight back when other horses rough-house. He prefers to be with other quiet geldings who’d rather hang out and eat.

Under saddle, Cedric’s first-class breeding really shines. He has three lovely, lofty, comfortable gaits and is the perfect mix of whoa and go. He is very responsive to his rider and really enjoys working. Learning new things is not a problem for Cedric! He is already getting the hang of bending and giving to the bit, and he has a beautiful natural roundness when his rider sits on his back and rides him into the bridle with seat and leg.

Cedric is an uncomplicated ride alone or in company. He has worked in the grassy areas around the farm, been out on the trails, and loves being out of the ring. He is very brave and level-headed (as you can see in our Old Dolan Road music video!). Cedric would be best suited for dressage, trail, or pleasure career. He would be suitable for at least an intermediate rider.

More videos coming soon. Cedric is eligible for the RRP’s 2019 and 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover!

ADOPTION FEE POLICY

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.
