If you’re looking for a true athlete looking to jump wholeheartedly into his next career, then Cruz is the horse for you. A seasoned “war horse” with 54 starts, Cruz has an incredible work ethic and enjoys having a job. On the ground, he is very well behaved, standing in crossties, bathing, clipping, and standing for the farrier like its nothing. He is so unfazed! He has been turned out with many different horses and never had any issues with any of his pasture buddies. Cruz greatly enjoys being loved on and getting cookies – he is very polite about being fed treats though – he doesn’t beg or get nippy.

Cruz has been in a slow, controlled exercise routine the last few month. Under saddle he is very brave. He is a forward ride and really enjoys having a job. His trot is nice and lofty with great suspension. He can be a little strong in the mouth right now but as he settles and works more he softens and relaxes through his back and neck. Cruz has been trail ridden and enjoys walking around in the country. He has been in work with other horses in the ring and had zero issues with distraction. Cruz would be best suited for an confident intermediate or advanced rider.

As a special opportunity for qualified approved adopters, Cruz is available for adoption ahead of the normal schedule. Ideal qualified homes would be experienced with at least basic rehab protocol, have a good working relationship with their equine vet (so that rehabilitation plans and checkups are kept up-to-date), and would be comfortable continuing his slow training– patiently working up to full training. Qualified and approved adopters will have access to all of his veterinary records that we have though, including ultrasounds and his current/ projected rehab plan.

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, a fee is set for each horse that will ultimately help the horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means the program cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated and worked with by a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses the history of each horse and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that the costs associated with the ongoing care and additional training for each horse post-adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront that he or she will have more funds available to cover the ongoing costs of properly caring for a horse.
